Earth Day, Elevated: Sustainable Beauty in the Pacific Northwest

At Gene Juarez, beauty has always been about more than what you see in the mirror. It’s about how you feel when you leave, confident, refreshed, and taken care of. But it’s also about something bigger: the impact we leave behind.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, sustainability isn’t a trend, it’s a shared value. It’s part of how we live, how we show up for our communities, and how we care for the environment around us. This Earth Day, we’re reflecting on what it means to deliver exceptional beauty experiences while honoring that responsibility.

Because true luxury isn’t just about results; it’s about intention.

When you sit in a salon chair, it’s easy to focus on the experience in front of you, the consultation, the transformation, the final look. What most people don’t see is what happens behind the scenes. Across the salon and spa industry, services generate a significant amount of waste from hair clippings and foils to excess color and single-use materials. Historically, much of that has gone straight to landfills or waterways.

We believe that can and should — be different.

Since 2015, Gene Juarez has partnered with Green Circle Salons to build sustainability into the way we operate every single day. Through this program, we’re able to recover and repurpose the majority of our salon waste, without compromising the elevated experience our guests expect. It’s a continuous effort, grounded in thoughtful choices and ongoing improvements across our salons.

Hair clippings are collected and repurposed into materials that can help absorb oil in environmental cleanups. Metals like foils are recovered and recycled into new products. Excess hair color is captured and processed in a way that prevents it from entering waterways. We’ve also replaced many petrochemical-based supplies with biodegradable alternatives, including gloves. These actions happen quietly throughout each appointment, but together, they represent a meaningful shift in how a modern, sustainable salon operates.

And for us, it’s not just about intention, it’s about measurable impact.

In 2025 alone, Gene Juarez recycled 26,400 pounds of beauty waste. So far this year, we’ve already reached 6,195 pounds, and we’re continuing to build on that progress every day. Every service, every guest, every visit contributes to that impact, which means when you choose Gene Juarez, you’re part of something bigger than your appointment.

“At Gene Juarez, we believe beauty should feel as good as it looks. Our commitment to sustainability is not a campaign; it is how we operate every day across our salons and spas. Through our partnership with Green Circle Salons and the addition of Vish, we are transforming how beauty waste is managed, diverting thousands of pounds each month and ensuring our impact never comes at the expense of the environment.”
— Lyndie Moore, CEO

Sustainable beauty, to us, isn’t about asking you to change what you love. It’s not about giving up the color, services, or results you expect from a premium salon. It’s about delivering those same elevated results in a more thoughtful, responsible way. It lives in the systems we’ve built, the partners we’ve chosen, the products we offer, and the ongoing education we provide to our teams so sustainability becomes second nature, not an afterthought.

If you’re curious to learn more about how we approach sustainability across our salons, you can explore our full commitment.

For over 50 years, Gene Juarez has been part of the Pacific Northwest. This is our home, and caring for our community means caring for the environment we all share. Earth Day is a meaningful reminder of that responsibility, but for us, it’s something we think about every day, behind the chair, in our operations, and in the experience we create for every guest.

Because when you choose Gene Juarez, you’re choosing more than a service. You’re choosing a brand that believes beauty should feel good—and do good, too.
